Music has an important socio-political function and effect and as such is always embedded in power relations and hierarchizations. This also applies to the genre of classical music and the "sonic dominance" it exercises. Its colonial legacy still has an impact today through the heroization and canonization of composers such as Haydn, Beethoven, or Mozart in all areas of cultural production and consumption and secures classical music its unspoken superior status.

So we have to ask: How does classical music get its meaning, its aesthetic value, and its social and economic status?
In this evening we will talk about the necessity of democratization and diversification of musical practice and of educational and cultural institutions and how opening and diversity processes can succeed without falling into the trap of othering.
