Not everyone in Vienna has heard of ‘Zwidemu’, but the place with the cute-sounding name has long since become a fixture for the city's youth: Here, between the museums (officially Maria-Theresien-Platz), you can escape school, parents and everyday life, chill out, get high and find a sense of belonging. But the neo-baroque meadows had to be conquered first. Around 15 years ago, young people occupied a green space in the middle of evergreen ornamental shrubs and fountains that was not even allowed to be entered at first.
The exhibition ‘Zwidemu. Between Party and Protest’ sheds light on the young and idiosyncratic public space of Zwidemu in all its facets. How did it come about? What role did beer bans, hemp fairs and Facebook groups play in its development? And what significance does the place have today? The Startgalerie is hosting an exhibition of works by young Viennese artists that offers a historical retrospective, encouraging reflection on the current state of the city, space and politics, and showing youth culture in the context of space appropriation.
