Webtalk "Wissen.schafft.Kultur"

Cultural policy between conflict and compromise
Discussion

06.04.22, 15.30
Online - Zoom Webtalk

The discussion series "Knowledge Creates Culture" presents current findings from science and sheds light on how they can be used for cultural work. The moderated talk invites open exchange between scientists and cultural actors, asking questions, giving input and thus closing gaps between research and practice. Open to all those working in and interested in the arts and culture.

The political governance, planning, and public funding of culture is notoriously complex. In addition to competing notions of what even falls under this category, its status within the framework of public services of general interest is also contested. Is culture a public good that should be promoted accordingly, or should cultural formats themselves generate profits as market-compatible products? Here, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the vulnerability of the sector and its structural problems, but also - at least for a phase - helped relieve production pressures by providing government support for some. Whether this assessment is accurate and where cultural policy is headed in the future - whether it will remain confined to the narrower field of art and cultural production, for example, or be able to help shape new social fields: These are some of the questions we would like to discuss in this webtalk.
