"As the story unfolds" is an English idiom that describes how historical events develop according to an inner logic. It suggests that history becomes visible gradually and only reveals itself slowly over time. This story does not unfold in a linear fashion: it wrinkles and unravels, again and again, repeating itself, as Karl Marx said, as tragedy and farce. But what happens when the repetition continues endlessly, like a vortex that pulls us in?

We try to understand the system of overlapping historical layers that make up our present, smoothing out the chaos – but is there really a 'grand whole' in the end?

Or do we just keep unfolding, in a kind of endless spiral, until it turns out that the center is empty?

UNFOLD invites us to pursue this question. The exhibition is about formal, topological folds, but it is primarily about the complex layers of socio-political and geopolitical processes that shape our lives. The works in this exhibition invite us not to passively observe, but to actively 'unfold'.
