Syrian Links
"The sound of our music is stronger than the terrible sounds of war in Syria".
To conclude our Throwback series, we have chosen a special project with Syrian participation: Syrian Links from 2015! The idea: to bring Austrian and Syrian artists together and synergies on stage. In the run-up, contacts were established in close cooperation with the Syrian musician Salah Ammo and an exchange lasting several months was initiated. As a service point for cultural workers, we tried to offer a networking and information platform for Syrian artists in Austria in order to support their arrival in the domestic cultural scene.
The premiere of the six-member ensemble at Porgy & Bess exceeded all expectations: the group around the protagonists Salah Ammo and Orwa Saleh interpreted original compositions and traditional pieces of Syrian-Kurdish-Arabic music. In the piece "Refugees", life on the run came from the stage with an intensity that literally transported you to a crumbling barge in the Mediterranean. We will never forget it!
