A War in the Distance

On Thursday, September 22, steirischer herbst '22 opens. With A War in the Distance, the 55th edition of the festival highlights in a dense program of exhibitions, performances, and discussions the ongoing presence of wars in close proximity to Styria, Austria, and Western Europe - a topic that mentally likes to keep at a distance.

Under the curatorial direction of artistic director and chief curator Ekaterina Degot, steirischer herbst is developing a festival concept at the interface between documentary reality and artistic fiction for the fifth time: "This year, the cruel reality of the Russian attack on Ukraine overshadows everything else," says Degot. An exhibition of films by Ukrainian artists as well as films about Ukraine before and during the war already took a closer look at the Russian invasion in July as a prologue to steirischer herbst. Most of these video works can be seen again on the festival website from September 22.
