Robert Gabris

This Space Is Too Small For Our Bodies
Exhibition

07.09.2023 - 18.02.2024
Belvedere 21, Arsenalstraße 1, 1030 Wien

Robert Gabris' expansive drawings, installations, and performative works fascinate through their ambiguity. The exhibition by the Belvedere Art Award winner focuses attention on Gabris' engagement with the body.
Gabris examines the human body primarily through the medium of drawing, exploring its condition, edges, and forms in relation to queerness and multiple marginalizations. In his works, he places the bodies in a precisely delineated relationship to one another, conceived in postcolonial and institutional critique terms. The artist addresses voids of institutional exclusion by naming the mechanisms of exclusion in the art world.

In addition to the early work series The Blue Heart (2014) and the series This Space Is Too Small For Our Bodies, created especially for the exhibition, the space-filling installation ERROR - ROMA CORPOREALITY AND THEIR NONBINARY SPACES (2021), developed collaboratively with queer individuals in Slovakia, is on view in Austria for the first time. This calls for a reflection on white privilege, so that the queer, trans and non-binary community of Rom*nja is not only a symbolic guest in the exhibition space, but can also occupy discursive space.
This exhibition was made possible through the cooperation with Vendome Projects Art.
