Grew an Alien Inside of Me
Performance * in english and arabic

7.10 + 8.10.2022, 19.30/20.20
TQW Halle G, Museumsplatz 1, 1070 Wien

A meditation on two of the most powerful human experiences – birth and revolution.
In this multi-media performance, Rima Najdi explores birth and revolution in tandem. Drawing from the remembered, felt experiences of mothers in labour and protesters in the street, I Grew an Alien Inside of Me asks how the body can subvert, circumscribe, and repurpose meanings of the event. Digitised loops play with rhythm, repetition, breath, and expectation and invite audiences to engage and interact with testimonies of giving birth and participating in a protest. Far from following a linear logic or a singular ontology, the cyclical, chaotic experiences of labour and finding and losing comrades in the street point to a different kind of clarity and vision that cannot be reduced to outcomes. The resulting choreography invites reflections on the most powerful of human experiences – those of giving birth and participating in a revolution.

Artists*

Rima Najdi is a Berlin-based performance artist. Her work occupies and (re)negotiates in-between spaces. She grapples with how identity is constructed and perceived, focusing on the body’s lived experience. She is interested in the body’s vulnerability in relation to the politicised tropes of gender, safety, mobility and representation through diverse mediums (performance, costume design, video installations, poster production). She challenges established social and aesthetic “norms” and pushes the boundaries of the personal in pursuit of the body’s capacity to reclaim political knowledge through art. Najdi’s work has been presented at several international festivals and venues. Among her upcoming and recent performances: Dress ME how YOU like & Happy New Fear, Prague Crossroads Festival (2019). Think Much. Cry Much. Spring Festival, Utrecht (2018), Spielart Festival, Munich, Happy New Fear, Bodies Beyond Borders, Copenhagen, Steirischer Herbst Festival, Graz (2017).
