Cafer, a metalworker, brings his family from Turkey to Germany. He is convinced that Germany is the land of opportunity. However, the new life brings many difficulties and unexpected events – his wife is involved in the women's movement, the eldest son does not want to go to school, the daughter has to stay at home and take care of her newborn brother.

KARA KAFA stands out from other examples of German-Turkish cinema with its left-wing political perspective on labour migration. After its completion, the Turkish censorship committee at the time banned the film, claiming that it offended ‘the honour of Germany, the friendly nation’. In 2023, a restored version of the film celebrated its belated premiere in Germany. (Can Sungu)
