Efrat Alony and Mahan Mirarab's new project "Out Of The Box" celebrates their diverse/ eclectic cultural heritage, originality and extraordinary way of making music.
Alony and Mirarab redefine jazz and its freedom in exciting musical fantasy lands. They dare to think outside the box so that sound, rhythm and compositional approaches are unusually playful turned on their heads and combined in new ways. Even silence is used as a valuable performative tool. For years Alony and Mirarab have been delighting audiences with their own projects, and now they come together for the first time in search of a shared story. In which a new musical journey of discovery is played out through an individual, expressive performance.

Artists
Efrat Alony, born in Haifa, Israel, studied composition and singing, first in her home country, Israel, then in the USA at Berklee College of Music in Boston and finally in Berlin at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music. The award-winning singer manages to dynamically unfold her music with an interplay of humor and depth. Her strong soulful voice is able to effortlessly slip into a wide variety of characters and emotions like a wonderful creature that constantly takes on new forms. To repeat herself is out of the question for the artist. She always takes new risks with her music, because for Alony art is movement, courage and fearlessness. With her album "Hollywood Isn't Calling" she has been nominated for the German Jazz Award 2022 in two categories (Best Vocal Album of The Year & Best Composition of Year).
"...She has long been one of the most important voices in European jazz. With this album, Efrat Alony again succeeds in packaging political and other complicated themes in such a way that they seem to float as if attached to balloons." - Jazz Podium, Rainer Bratfisch
Mahan Mirarab, born in Tehran, Iran, is an Iranian/Austrian guitarist, composer, arranger and music producer. He has spent years learning traditional Persian music, and has also studied Arabic, African, Turkish, Kurdish influences of Iranian cultural diversity. His goal is to incorporate Middle Eastern cultures into his music with reference. Mirarab's compositions and arrangements feature a unique blend of rhythms and harmonies that demonstrate his rich musical vocabulary as well as his in-depth knowledge of diverse musical styles.
,,Persian Side of Jazz is one of the year’s most unique and compelling releases mainly because the stylistic blueprint of Mirarab’s compositions draw upon stylistic influences, mainly Persian folk and world music, that are exotic to stateside ears.” - JAZZ CORNER
