with Ghalia Benali & Kiya Tabassian
08.05.2023, 7pm
Brunnenpassage, Brunnengasse 71/ Yppenplatz, 1160 Wien
The Iranian musician Kiya Tabassian’s fascination with the great 13th century poet and mystic Rumi started in his youth. When he later crossed paths with the exceptional Tunisian-Belgian artist Ghalia Benali, he knew immediately that her unique voice and poignant performance were perfect for Rumi's timeless, stirring poems. Since then, they have been exploring musical avenues together to – in Rumi's spirit – break down all barriers.
Marko Kölbl, Head of the Institute for Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, talks to Ghalia Benali and Kiya Tabassian about their musical approach to Rumi's works (including a short live performance) and their significance in today's context.
The interview will be conducted in English.
